Winona County is located in the southeastern corner of the great state of Minnesota. It was first established on February 23, 1854, and named after a legendary Dakota woman known as Princess We-Noh-Nah. This area was originally inhabited by the Dakota Sioux Native Americans, who later had to cede their lands to the United States government through various treaties.

During the 19th century, the city of Winona, which is also the county seat, became an important hub for transportation and commerce, thanks to its strategic location on the Mississippi River. It attracted immigrants, mainly from Germany and Poland, who contributed to the thriving lumber and milling industries. As the lumber industry declined, Winona County gradually transformed into a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, education, retail, and technology.

Winona County is home to several colleges and universities, such as Winona State University and St. Mary's University of Minnesota, both located in the city of Winona. The county is known for its natural beauty, with Sugar Loaf, a towering rock pinnacle, being a prominent landmark in the region.

A fun fact about Winona County is that it's home to the annual Frozen River Film Festival, which showcases documentaries and independent films from around the world. Additionally, the county has a strong arts and cultural scene, and is home to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, which features masterpieces by renowned artists such as Renoir, Picasso, and Van Gogh.
