Crawford County is located in the east-central region of the great state of Missouri. The county was officially founded on January 23, 1829, and named in honor of U.S. Secretary of War, William H. Crawford. Situated within the Ozark Highlands, the area was originally inhabited by the Osage Native American tribe. European settlers, predominantly of German, Irish, and Scottish descent, began settling in the area from the early 19th century, initially drawn by the fertile soil and plentiful timber resources.

In the mid-19th century, Crawford County witnessed the construction of the Southwest Branch of the Pacific Railroad (now known as the BNSF Railway), which played a significant role in the development of the region. Steelville, the county seat, experienced a boom in population and industry as a result. Subsequently, many small towns and hamlets established themselves as vibrant commercial centers.

The economy of Crawford County has revolved around agriculture, timber, and mining throughout its history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the timber industry flourished, leading to the establishment of several sawmills. Similarly, small-scale mining operations emerged to extract minerals like iron, lead, and silica.

One fun fact about this region is that it is part of the larger Meramec Valley region and is interwoven with the Ozark National Scenic Riverways system, with the Meramec River flowing through the county. This makes Crawford County a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, offering various recreational activities such as camping, canoeing, fishing, and exploring the numerous caves present throughout the county, including the popular Onondaga Cave State Park.
