Lewis County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of Missouri. It was officially organized on January 2, 1833, and named in honor of Meriwether Lewis, the famed explorer who, alongside William Clark, led the Lewis and Clark Expedition between 1804 and 1806.

The county's first inhabitants were Native American tribes, including the Ioway, Sauk, and Fox people. European settlers, primarily from the states of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee, arrived in the early 19th century attracted by the fertile land and abundant wildlife.

Canton, the largest town in the county, was established in 1830 and was an important port on the Mississippi River. In 1851, Culver-Stockton College was founded in Canton, and it remains the oldest institution of higher education in northeast Missouri.

Agriculture has historically played a significant role in the county's economy, with crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat being produced alongside a thriving livestock industry.

Fun Fact: LaGrange, another city in Lewis County, is home to the annual "Fall Festival and Flea Market," which is held every September. The event not only showcases the community's long-standing tradition of agriculture but also features live entertainment, a parade, and games for visitors to enjoy.
