Carbon County, Montana
.Carbon County, situated in the great state of Montana, was established on March 4, 1895. Originally a part of Park County, it was carved out of the existing territory to create a new county, which was later named "Carbon" due to the rich coal deposits found in the area. Covering approximately 2,064 square miles, this region is located in the south-central part of the state, sharing a border with Wyoming to the south.
The Crow Tribe initially inhabited the region, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition brought the first known European explorers to Carbon County in 1806. The area's mining and agricultural industries attracted prospectors and settlers in the late 19th century, which laid the groundwork for the county's early development.
Red Lodge, the county seat, is well-known for its rich history of coal mining. The town boomed in the early 20th century as railroads expanded, allowing for the widespread transport of coal. The decline of the coal industry, however, impacted this region in the mid-20th century, leading to a decline in population.
Today, Carbon County is known for its breathtaking landscape, with portions of the Custer, Gallatin, and Shoshone National Forests located within its boundaries, as well as the famous Beartooth Pass leading to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park.
Fun Fact: The Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, which is partially located within Carbon County, was established in 1968 as the first public wild horse refuge in the United States. Here, visitors can catch a glimpse of the endangered and genetically unique Pryor Mountain Mustangs that roam the area.
