Dawson County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Montana. It was created in 1869 as part of the Montana Territory and later became an official county in 1895 after Montana achieved statehood in 1889. The county is named in honor of Major Andrew Dawson, a prominent pioneer, fur trader, and Indian agent who made significant contributions to the development of Montana in the 1800s.

The city of Glendive serves as the county seat and is the largest community in the area. The Yellowstone River runs through Dawson County, which provides an important natural resource and recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors.

Historically, Dawson County's economy has been based on agriculture, ranching, and the extraction of various natural resources. Over time, the county has shifted towards a more diversified economy including oil and gas production, tourism, and other industries. The presence of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in nearby Poplar, Montana has also led to increased economic ties, as well as fostering cultural exchange and heritage preservation.

A fun fact about this region is the Makoshika State Park, which is the largest state park in Montana and is located within Dawson County. The park offers an impressive landscape of badlands, canyons, and natural wonders. One of the notable features of the park is its dinosaur fossils, making the area a popular destination for paleontologists and dinosaur enthusiasts. Visitors to the park can hike, camp, and explore the unique geological formations while learning about the prehistoric creatures that once roamed this region of the United States.
