The county is situated in the northeastern part of Montana and covers an area of 2,369 square miles. The land mostly consists of prairie, with the Missouri River defining its southern border. The reservation covers a large portion of the county and is inhabited by members of the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes. Their distinctive cultural traditions and history continue to enrich the region.

One fun fact about Roosevelt County is that it is home to the Fort Peck Dam, the largest earth-filled dam in the United States. Constructed in the 1930s as part of the New Deal's Public Works Administration, the dam helps provide flood control, hydropower, and water for irrigation.
