Silver Bow County, located in the southwestern part of the great state of Montana, was established on February 16, 1881. The county encompasses an area of approximately 718 square miles and has Butte as its county seat. The county derived its name from the creek where silver deposits were discovered in the 1860s, leading to a mining boom in the region.

The history of Silver Bow County is tightly connected to the development of the mining industry, particularly copper mining. The region became a significant hub for mining operations shortly after the discovery of rich mineral resources in the late 19th century. Copper mining from the 1880s until the mid-20th century fueled economic growth, turning Butte into one of the wealthiest cities in Montana. During this period, Butte was sometimes referred to as "the Richest Hill on Earth" due to the massive amounts of copper, gold, silver, and other minerals extracted from the mines.

Butte also became home to a large, diverse population of miners, which led to the establishment of a vibrant community with people from numerous European countries. This diverse population made Butte a melting pot of cultural influences.

A fun fact about this region is that Butte, the county seat of Silver Bow County, was once the largest city between Chicago and San Francisco. At its peak during the copper mining boom, Butte had a population of around 100,000 people, with some estimates even placing it at around 130,000. Today, the population of Butte is closer to 34,000 residents.
