Anson County, North Carolina
.Anson County, located in the great state of North Carolina, was established on March 25, 1750. It was named in honor of British Admiral George Anson, 1st Baron Anson, who was appointed as Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty in 1751. The county is part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Area and its county seat is Wadesboro.
Anson County's initial formation was out of the southeastern part of Bladen County. Over time, the county has seen multiple changes in its boundaries. In 1764, Rowan County was carved out of Anson County, while Richmond County became a separate entity in 1779. Later, in 1842, Union County was created from parts of Anson and Mecklenburg counties.
The county has played a unique role in American history. At the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, Anson County locals were engaged in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge. Moreover, two key figures of the Revolutionary War, Edmund Fanning and Philip Alston, were from Anson County.
Agriculture has long been central to the county's economy, with cotton farming being dominant during the 19th and 20th centuries. Additionally, the timber industry has been essential to the region's economic growth.
Fun Fact: Anson County is home to the largest population of the federally endangered Schweinitz's Sunflower (Helianthus schweinitzii), a perennial wildflower found in unique prairie-like ecosystems in the North Carolina Piedmont region.
