.Avery County is situated in the western part of the state of North Carolina and was established in 1911. It is named after Waightstill Avery, a prominent lawyer and military officer during the American Revolution. The county is considered part of the Appalachians' Blue Ridge Mountains, which grant it a picturesque landscape and a significant tourism industry.
Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Cherokee.
