Avery County is situated in the western part of the state of North Carolina and was established in 1911. It is named after Waightstill Avery, a prominent lawyer and military officer during the American Revolution. The county is considered part of the Appalachians' Blue Ridge Mountains, which grant it a picturesque landscape and a significant tourism industry.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Cherokee. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, European settlers, mainly of Scottish and Irish descent, began to migrate to the area. The region's isolation led to a slow development of infrastructure and communities compared to other parts of North Carolina. However, the construction of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad in the late 1800s played a crucial role in connecting the county to the rest of the state and boosting its economy.

Fun fact: One interesting attraction in Avery County is the Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain, which is a massive swinging pedestrian bridge hanging precisely one mile above sea level.
