Carteret County, North Carolina

Carteret County, located in the U.S. state of North Carolina, has a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century. Established in 1722, the county was named in honor of Sir George Carteret, a British politician who played a significant role in the restoration of the monarchy in the United Kingdom. Carteret County is part of the Crystal Coast region, which is known for its stunning beaches, bountiful seafood, and vibrant marine life.
Originally inhabited by the Coree tribe, the region was gradually colonized by European settlers. With the help of Native Americans, the settlers developed extensive trade networks, and the region's main industries included farming, fishing, and timber. Beaufort, the county seat, was established in 1709 and is one of the oldest towns in North Carolina.
Cape Lookout, a major attraction in Carteret County, has played a significant role in the area's maritime history. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse, constructed in 1859, acted as a guiding tool for sailors and helped prevent shipwrecks along the dangerous coastline.
A fun fact about Carteret County is that it's home to the famous wild Banker horses, which are believed to have descended from Spanish Mustangs brought to the region in the 16th century. Today, the horses roam the Shackleford Banks, a barrier island off the coast of North Carolina, and have become an iconic symbol of Carteret County's natural heritage.
