Durham County is located in the Piedmont region of the great state of North Carolina, and it is known for its rich history, cultural significance, and bustling economy. Established on April 17, 1881, Durham County was formed from parts of Orange County and Wake County due to its rapid population growth during that time. It was named after Dr. Bartlett Durham, a physician and entrepreneur, who donated land for a railway station which led to the establishment of a new town in the 1850s.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Durham County became a hub for tobacco production and manufacturing. One of the most famous enterprises was the American Tobacco Company, which was founded by Washington Duke and his family. They were instrumental in transforming Durham from a small rural town into a thriving industrial center.
