Martin County is located in the Coastal Plain region of the great state of North Carolina. Formed in 1774 from the southeastern part of Halifax County and the western part of Tyrrell County, Martin County takes its name from Josiah Martin, the last Royal Governor of North Carolina before the American Revolutionary War. The county seat is the city of Williamston.
The region has a rich history that dates back before the arrival of European settlers. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Tuscarora and Algonquian peoples. European settlement began in the early 18th century, and by the mid-18th century, it was predominantly inhabited by farmers growing cash crops such as tobacco, cotton, and corn.
During the American Civil War, Martin County saw action with the Confederate forces using the Roanoke River as a supply route. After the war, the region faced economic challenges, as the formerly enslaved population transitioned to freedom and sharecropping became the dominant form of farming. The county experienced economic development in the 20th century with the emergence of manufacturing, retail, and service industries.
One fun fact about Martin County is that it is home to the Deadwood Theme Park, a Western-themed amusement park in the town of Bear Grass. This park offers visitors a trip back in time to experience the Wild West era with live shows, horseback riding, ziplining, and various other attractions.
