Richmond County is located in the southern part of North Carolina and was founded in 1779. It was named in honor of Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke of Richmond, who was a strong advocate for American independence from Britain during the Revolutionary War period. The county seat is Rockingham, which was also established in 1779 and named after Charles Watson-Wentworth, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, then British Prime Minister, who both supported American independence and repealed the Stamp Act.
Richmond County played a significant role during the American Civil War, as it was home to several Confederate training camps and manufacturing facilities. During the late 19th century, the region saw tremendous growth in the textile and railroad industries, which eventually led to the development of the city of Hamlet.
Today, Richmond County has a diverse economy consisting of manufacturing, agriculture, and service industries. One fun fact about Richmond County is that it hosts the Rockingham Speedway, which is a popular racing venue in North Carolina.
