Rockingham County, located in the north-central part of North Carolina, was established on December 29, 1785, from portions of Guilford County. It is named in honor of Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, a British statesman who supported American independence during the Revolutionary War. The county seat is Wentworth, while the largest city is Eden.
The region has played an important role in the growth of the textile, furniture, and tobacco industries in North Carolina, with the town of Reidsville becoming a major center for tobacco production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Historically, the county was home to the Dan River and Mayo River, which provided means of transportation and played a role in the growth of the industrial sector.
One fun fact about Rockingham County is that it is home to the Rockingham Speedway (nicknamed "The Rock"), which is a legendary racetrack that has hosted various NASCAR events over the years. First opened in 1965, Rockingham Speedway's highly competitive races attracted racing enthusiasts from far and wide, although it is no longer used for major racing events as of 2013.
