Stanly County, located in the southern Piedmont region of North Carolina, was formed in 1841 from parts of Montgomery County and named after John Stanly, a distinguished North Carolina statesman and congressman. The county seat is Albemarle, which also became known as the "Home of the Needle" due to the presence of the Wiscassett Cotton Mills, a thriving textile factory in the early 20th century. The region was primarily occupied by Catawba and Waxhaw Native American tribes before European settlers arrived.

Throughout its history, Stanly County played important roles related to agriculture, industry, and transportation developments. Cotton and tobacco were the chief agricultural products of the region. In the early 20th century, the county saw significant growth due to the expansion of textile mills, driven by the abundant supply of raw materials and increase in railroads.

Fun Fact: The Badin Historic District in Stanly County is not only known for its rich heritage and historic mill houses but also houses the Badin Hardaway Site, a significant archaeological site consisting of over 4,000 years of prehistoric and historic artifacts from Native American communities.

Overall, Stanly County has a rich history ranging from Native American settlements to strong agricultural and industrial roots, and it offers a unique glimpse into the development of North Carolina's Piedmont region.
