.Passaic County is located in northeastern New Jersey, with its county seat in Paterson. It was created on February 7, 1837, from portions of both Bergen County and Essex County. The county is named after the Passaic River, which originates in Sussex County and flows through Passaic County before emptying into Newark Bay. The name Passaic is derived from a Native American word meaning "valley" or "where the river passes through the valley."
Passaic County is known for its rich industrial history, particularly in the city of Paterson. In the early 1800s, Paterson emerged as a leading center for manufacturing, fueled by the power of the Great Falls of the Passaic River.
