Sussex County, located in the northwestern part of New Jersey, was founded on June 8, 1753, and is one of the oldest counties in the state. Its creation was part of a larger restructuring of New Jersey's counties that stemmed from England's royal decree. The county derives its name from the historic county of Sussex, England.

During its early history, Sussex County was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Lenape people. Europeans began to explore and settle in the region in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Iron, zinc, and other minerals found in the area played a significant role in the county's development, with mines and forges contributing to industrial growth.

During the American Revolution, several notable military events occurred in Sussex County. In 1780, George Washington's Army encamped in nearby Jockey Hollow while the Continental Army used the iron and zinc resources in the region to produce weapons and materials for the war effort.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Sussex County continued to grow due to agriculture, pottery, and glass manufacturing industries. Additionally, dairy farming and tourism became essential components of the county's economy. Many resorts and tourist destinations emerged in the area, such as Lake Mohawk and the iconic gingerbread-style houses around Culver Lake.

A fun fact about Sussex County is that it is home to the New Jersey State Fair, an annual event held at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. The fair, which began in 1919, showcases agricultural exhibits, amusement rides, and entertainment, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year and celebrating the county's rich agricultural heritage.
