.Union County, New Jersey is a vibrant region with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1857. It is situated in the northeastern part of the state and covers approximately 105 square miles. The county was formed from portions of Essex County, as lawmakers felt that the growing population and increasing industrialization warranted the creation of a new, separate governing unit.
Before the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, who farmed along the rivers and coastlines.
