Steuben County, located in western New York, was established on March 18, 1796, and named after Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian military officer who contributed significantly to the American Revolutionary War. The county has a rich background in American history, with its area initially inhabited by several Native American tribes, including the Seneca and the Iroquois.

The first European settlers arrived in the late 18th century, and as settlement grew, so did the importance of Steuben County in the development of New York State. The county became a vital transportation route during the early 19th century, with the Chemung Canal providing a link between the Susquehanna River and the Erie Canal system. This facilitated economic growth, particularly in agriculture and manufacturing.

One of the most prominent landmarks in the area is the Corning Museum of Glass, founded in 1951 in Corning, Steuben County. The museum is dedicated to glass art and glass-based scientific discoveries, featuring over 50,000 glass objects in its collection. It is one of the leading institutions in glass research and glassblowing education in the world.

A fun fact about Steuben County is that it is home to the world's largest pancake griddle, located in Penn Yan. The griddle measures 28 feet long by 10 feet wide, making it an impressive novelty for those visiting the area.
