Langston, Oklahoma is a small village located in Logan County. It was founded in 1890 and originally called "Langston City" after John Mercer Langston, a civil rights activist and the first African American elected to Congress from Virginia. Today, Langston is home to Langston University, a historically black college and university (HBCU) that was founded in 1897. The university is one of the few educational institutions in the state that offer a curriculum focusing on the history and culture of African Americans. The village of Langston also boasts a downtown area with various restaurants and shops, as well as several parks and recreational areas for outdoor activities.
