Ellis County, located in the northwestern part of Oklahoma, was created on July 16, 1907, when Oklahoma became a state. It was named in honor of Albert H. Ellis, who served as vice president of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention. The area was initially a part of the "Cherokee Outlet" or "Cherokee Strip," a large tract of land owned by the Cherokee Nation as a part of their removal treaty with the US federal government. The Outlet was opened to non-Indian settlers on September 16, 1893, during the Land Run, where participants raced to claim land once it was made available for settlement.

The diverse topography of Ellis County ranges from rolling hills to flat grasslands, with a significant portion of the land devoted to agricultural use. The main economic drivers in the region include agriculture, primarily wheat cultivation, and cattle ranching. The plentiful natural resources led to the growth of rural communities throughout the county such as Arnett, Shattuck, Gage, and Fargo.

Fun Fact: The town of Shattuck, located within Ellis County, is home to a unique historical site-the Shattuck Windmill Museum and Park. This outdoor museum showcases over 50 vintage windmills, a testament to the area's longstanding reliance on wind power and an important part of the region's agricultural heritage.
