Wheeler County, situated in the great state of Oregon, was founded on February 17, 1899, and was named in honor of Henry H. Wheeler, an early settler who owned a farm in the area. The county is sprawling over an area of 1,715 square miles and has a population of approximately 1,300 people, making it the least populated county in Oregon.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Northern Paiute and Tenino (Warm Springs) people. White settlers began to arrive in the mid-19th century, attracted by the prospect of gold and the establishment of the Oregon Trail. The town of Fossil, which was named after the discovery of fossils in the region, is the county seat of Wheeler County since its inception. Mitchell and Spray are the other significant towns within the county.

Wheeler County is primarily rural, with agriculture, livestock, and forestry as its primary economic drivers, complemented by tourism due to its stunning landscapes such as the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, featuring its main attraction, the Painted Hills. This beautiful geographical feature attracts visitors with its mesmerizing, colorful layers of mineral deposits that showcase various geological eras.

A fun fact about Wheeler County is that the Fossil High School's football field is located within the Fossil Beds National Monument, making it one of the most uniquely situated schools in the country.
