Coffee County is located in southern Middle Tennessee and was officially established on January 8, 1836. It was named in honor of John R. Coffee, a prominent planter, land surveyor, and a military leader who played a significant role in the Creek War and the Indian Removal. John R. Coffee served under General Andrew Jackson, who later became the President of the United States.
The county seat, Manchester, was also established in 1836 along the stagecoach route from Knoxville to Huntsville, Alabama. The town was named after Manchester, England, in the hope that it would become a center for the cotton trade like its British namesake.
Tullahoma, another notable city within Coffee County, was founded in 1852 when the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad laid tracks through the area. Tullahoma's name is derived from a Native American word meaning "red rock" and is a nod to the region's indigenous history.
Coffee County is known for its agricultural production, particularly in livestock, poultry, and crops like corn and soybeans. The county also hosts some manufacturing and industry, including textiles, food processing, and automotive parts.
One fun fact about Coffee County is that every June, it's home to the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, which takes place in Manchester. This major event attracts tens of thousands of visitors and features a diverse lineup of artists and musicians, as well as various art displays, workshops, and food vendors. The festival has become an icon of the county and an important event for the region's tourism and economy.
