Dyer County, located in the northwest portion of Tennessee, was officially established on October 16, 1823. The county was named after Robert Henry Dyer, a military officer who served in the Creek Wars and the War of 1812. Prior to the establishment of the county, the Chickasaw Native American tribe inhabited the land.
Dyer County played a key role in the American Civil War, with numerous Confederate and Union skirmishes occurring within its borders. In fact, the region was home to the Civil War Battle of Island No. 10, a strategic location on the Mississippi River which the Confederates fortified with artillery.
After the war, the county underwent significant economic growth fueled by the arrival of the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad.
