Austin County is a historic and vibrant region located in southeastern Texas, within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Named after Stephen F. Austin, the region was officially founded in 1837, although its history goes back much further than that. Stephen F. Austin, often called the "Father of Texas," was an empresario, or land commissioner, who played a pivotal role in the settlement and development of Texas. The area that would eventually become Austin County was once inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Karankawa, Tonkawa, and Comanche. The first European settlers, mainly immigrants of German, Anglo, and Czech descent, arrived in the early 19th century, attracted by the region's fertile land and mild climate.
During the Texas Revolution, Austin County played a crucial role since the community of San Felipe de Austin, which now is the city of San Felipe, served as the unofficial capital of the region and the headquarters of Stephen F. Austin. The famous "Come and Take It" cannon, which was a symbol of Texas' defiance against Mexico during the Battle of Gonzales, is now preserved in Austin County.
Nowadays, Austin County is a blend of rural farming communities, small towns, and burgeoning suburbs. Bellville is the county seat, and other communities include Sealy, Wallis, and Industry. The county encompasses 656 square miles and had a population of about 29,758 as of the 2020 Census.
