Coryell County, located in the heart of Texas, was founded in 1854 and named after James Coryell, a frontiersman and Texas Ranger. The county seat, Gatesville, was established the same year. The region has a rich history, primarily revolving around farming, ranching, and several emerging industries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Tonkawa, Lipan Apaches, and the Comanche. Spanish and Mexican troops also traversed the area during their expeditions. The Texas Rangers played a significant role in making the region safer for settlers by protecting them from Native American uprisings and general outlaws.

Coryell County thrived agriculturally with cotton production, while other notable industries included milling, mining, and textile creation. The arrival of the Missouri Pacific Railroad facilitated growth and transportation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county's population experienced growth, with settlers from Germany, Ireland, and other European countries.

An interesting fun fact about this region is the famous "Last Drive-In Picture Show" in Gatesville, which is one of the few remaining drive-in movie theaters in Texas. This historic theater has been operating since 1950 and continues to entertain residents and tourists to this date.
