Kaufman County is located in the northeastern part of Texas and is a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It was founded in 1848 and named in honor of David Spangler Kaufman, a diplomat and congressman who was instrumental in the annexation of Texas to the United States. The county covers an area of 786 square miles and has a rich history involving Native Americans, early settlers, and ranchers.
Before European settlers arrived, Native American tribes, primarily the Caddo, occupied the land. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in the early 1840s, and the county was officially established on February 26, 1848. The first courthouse was built in the county seat of Kaufman in 1851.
