Motley County, Texas
.Motley County is located in the Panhandle Plains region of Texas, founded in 1876 but not fully organized until 1891. The county seat is Matador, which was established in 1891 as well. The county was named after Dr. Junius William Mottley, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence; however, the county name was accidentally spelled with an "e" when it was formed (Motley, instead of Mottley).
The region has a rich history of Native American inhabitants, particularly the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache tribes. During the 19th century, after the Texas Revolution and annexation of Texas to the United States, buffalo hunting and cattle raising became common in the county. Ranching, particularly the Matador Ranch, has been instrumental in the county's development and economy. Agricultural activities such as cotton farming have also contributed to the local economy for many years.
Motley County has been home to several notable residents, including Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks and world-renowned rodeo performer and cowboy Punk Carter.
One fun fact about Motley County is that it is known for the Roaring Springs Depot, an original train depot from the early 1900s which has been converted into a community museum to showcase local history and heritage. The depot displays a variety of artifacts and photographs, providing a glimpse into the early days of Motley County and the now-defunct Quanah, Acme, and Pacific Railway.
