Potter County, located in the great state of Texas, was established on August 21, 1876, and named in honor of Robert R. Potter, a veteran of the Texas Revolution and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The county has a rich history, filled with events and developments that shaped its present character.
The area was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, such as Apaches, Kiowas, and Comanches, who were attracted to its fertile lands and other natural resources. The first recorded European exploration of the region occurred during the 1540s by Spanish explorer Francisco Coronado. In the following centuries, the land was under Spanish, Mexican, and eventually Texan control.
A significant event that changed the course of Potter County's history was the arrival of the railroad during the late 19th century. The construction of the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway, and the Santa Fe Railway system, attracted settlers and contributed to the establishment of Amarillo, the current county seat of Potter County. Amarillo quickly emerged as a major trading hub in cattle and agriculture industries, significantly boosting the economy of the county.
One fun fact about Potter County is that it's home to the world-famous Cadillac Ranch, a public art installation featuring ten half-buried Cadillacs, which were created in 1974 by artists Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez, and Doug Michels as a tribute to the Golden Age of American Automobiles. The installation attracts countless visitors annually and offers a unique way to learn about the evolution of car design while being a symbol of Americana.
