Reagan County is located in the great state of Texas and was officially created on March 7, 1903. It was named in honor of John H. Reagan, a prominent Texan who served as the United States Senator, the first Secretary of the Texas Railroad Commission, a United States Representative, and the Postmaster General of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.
The area was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Comanche and Lipan Apache. European settlers began exploring and establishing settlements in the late 17th century. Ranching became an essential industry in the area, and early settlers endured conflicts with native tribes and harsh environmental conditions.
The establishment of the railway system marked an important step in the development of Reagan County, with the Kansas City, Mexico, and Orient Railway (KCMO) reaching the area in 1911. Soon after, the town of Big Lake was founded, which eventually became the county seat.
One interesting and fun fact about Reagan County is that it was the site of the first major oil discovery in the West Texas Permian Basin. This discovery occurred in 1923 at the Santa Rita No. 1 well, forever changing the region's economy and development. The county saw a significant boom in population and industry as a result of the newfound wealth from the oil fields. Today, Reagan County remains an important player in the oil industry and is home to the "Oil Patch Museum" to commemorate its significant history within the industry.
