Box Elder County is located in the northwestern part of Utah, bordering the states of Nevada and Idaho. It was formed in 1856 as one of the early counties in Utah Territory and named after the Box Elder tree, which is abundant in the area. The county covers an area of 6,729 square miles, making it the fourth-largest county in Utah.
The first known inhabitants of Box Elder County were the Shoshone, Goshute, and Northern Paiute Native American tribes. European settlers, mostly Mormon pioneers, arrived in the 1850s, establishing several communities, including Brigham City, which is the county seat.
Box Elder County has played a significant role in Utah's history. The completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad took place in the county at Promontory Summit in 1869. This historic event marked the joining of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads, which was commemorated with the driving of the Golden Spike. In 1965, the Golden Spike National Historic Site was established to preserve this historic location.
During World War II, Box Elder County was the site of a temporary internment camp for Japanese Americans at the Topaz Relocation Center. At its peak, the camp consisted of more than 9,000 internees.
A fun fact about Box Elder County is that it is home to the Spiral Jetty, an iconic earthwork sculpture by artist Robert Smithson. Created in 1970, Spiral Jetty consists of more than 6,000 tons of black basalt rocks arranged in a spiral formation that extends over 1,500 feet into the Great Salt Lake.
