Hopewell County is located in the state of Virginia, United States. Technically, Hopewell is an independent city rather than a county, as it belongs to no particular county. The city was first established by Sir Thomas Dale in 1613 and initially named Charles City Point, during the early English settlement period.
The area was significant to the Powhatan Confederacy, a group of Native American tribes that existed before the arrival of English settlers. In 1795, the town was renamed Bermuda Hundred after Bermuda, one of the first places to be colonized by the English.
During the American Civil War, the Battle of Swift Creek took place near Hopewell, and the Confederate Army led by Robert E. Lee established a major defensive line nearby. The U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot was set up in Hopewell during the Spanish-American War in the late 19th century, giving a boost to the local economy.
The city was officially chartered as the City of Hopewell in 1916, after the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company began construction of a dynamite factory to support World War I efforts. The town grew rapidly in response to the industrial developments, leading to the creation of the "Chemical Capital of the World." The Hopewell High School, which dates back to 1924, is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
A fun fact about Hopewell is the Wonder Tower (also known as the Hopewell Factory Water Tower), a 155-foot-tall structure built in 1921 to store water for the Hopewell Projects. The Wonder Tower, made entirely of riveted cast-iron plates, has a placard on its base declaring it the world's tallest water tower.
Today, Hopewell is known for its historical significance, rich industrial heritage, and its scenic location along the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers.
