Two of America's Founding Fathers and early presidents were born in Westmoreland County. George Washington, the first president, was born at Pope's Creek in the county in 1732, while James Monroe, the fifth president, was born in 1758 in Westmoreland County. Nestled on the Potomac River's shores, Westmoreland County was primarily an agricultural region, with tobacco being a key crop during the colonial period.
