Wise County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Virginia, with its county seat in Wise. The county was formed in 1856 from parts of Lee, Scott, and Russell Counties and named after Henry A. Wise, the Governor of Virginia at that time. The area was initially inhabited by Cherokee and Shawnee tribes, and Europeans began settling in the region in the late 1700s.

Wise County is primarily known for its rich coal resources, which became a driving force for the local economy from the late 19th century onwards. After the construction of the Clinch Valley Division of the Norfolk & Western Railway in the 1890s, the coal industry began to boom, attracting more settlers to the area. With increasing coal production, new towns sprouted across the county, including Big Stone Gap, Norton, and Appalachia.

One fun fact about Wise County is that it is home to the annual "Ramp Festival," celebrating the ramp, a wild onion native to eastern North America. The "Ramp Festival" takes place in the town of Wise, where participants can enjoy culinary dishes featuring ramps, live music, and other family-friendly activities. This unique festival not only fosters a connection to the local Appalachian heritage but also brings together residents and visitors to celebrate the flavors and culture of Wise County.
