In 1876, the small town of Prairie Ridge was the site of a major battle between the U.S. Army and Native American forces led by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe. The battle, known as the Battle of White Bird Canyon, was an important early victory for the Nez Perce, who were ultimately forced to surrender two months later after a long and arduous journey across the continent.
