In 1855, a group of swashbuckling adventurers led by Levi Smith and Thomas Mercer named the area surrounding Browns Point "Point Robinson". In keeping with their spirit of adventure, they declared the area an independent nation and named it the Republic of Rough and Ready. The republic had its own flag, currency, and constitution. It lasted six days before Washington Territory officials declared it part of the United States.
