1. Gig Harbor was originally called "Tacoma City" but its name was changed in 1915 to Gig Harbor, as a reference to the local harbor's gig-like boats.

2. The area was first settled by the Skokomish Tribe of Native Americans, and later by European settlers in 1841.

3. The first bridge to connect the town to the mainland was built in 1950, and it is now a historic landmark.

4. Gig Harbor is home to several historic sites, including the oldest working boat shop in the Northwest, the Jerisich Boat Works, which has been in operation since 1895.
