Tacoma is known as the "City of Destiny" due to its rich history as a major transportation hub in the Puget Sound region. In 1873, Northern Pacific Railway chose Tacoma as its western terminus, making it the first transcontinental railway to reach the city. This made Tacoma an important port and commercial center and earned it the nickname "The City of Destiny".
