- The town is named after its founder Richard Smythe, who bought the land from the Native Americans in 1665. The legend says that in exchange for his services as a mediator between the tribes, Chief Nissequogue granted Smythe ownership of the land that would become Smithtown.

- Smithtown is known for its beautiful natural landscapes and parks, including Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, Blydenburgh County Park, and Sunken Meadow State Park.

- In 1780, during the American Revolutionary War, the British army raided and burned down the town of Smithtown as part of a larger attack on Long Island.

- Smithtown was an important stop on the Long Island Rail Road, originally established in 1842, which helped boost the local economy and provided transportation to and from New York City.

- The first Lake Ronkonkoma Railroad Station was built in Smithtown in 1843, connecting the town with Lake Ronkonkoma, a popular summer vacation spot.
