One of the most important historical events that occurred near West Covina is the discovery of oil in the Los Angeles basin. The first successful oil well was drilled in nearby Signal Hill in 1921, which led to a boom in oil production in the area. Another important event near West Covina was the construction of the San Gabriel Mission, which was founded in 1771 by Spanish missionaries. The mission played an important role in the colonization of California and became an important center of agriculture and trade in the region.
