California, Missouri is a town in Moniteau County, but it is named after the state of California. The town was founded in the 1840s and has a population of around 4,200 people. It is known for its historic downtown area, which features a number of well-preserved 19th-century buildings, including the Moniteau County Courthouse and the Finke Opera House. The town is also home to a number of parks and outdoor recreation areas, including Proctor Park and the Moniteau Creek Conservation Area.
