Independence, Missouri is a city with a rich history, and one interesting anecdote is that it was the hometown of former US President Harry S. Truman. In fact, Truman was born in a small farmhouse near Independence and lived there for most of his early life.

Truman also used Independence as his campaign headquarters during his bid for re-election in 1948. He famously made a speech from the steps of the Jackson County Courthouse, promising to fight corruption and special interests if he was re-elected. He went on to win the election, and his speech has become known as the "Give 'em Hell" speech because of his fiery rhetoric. Today, visitors to Independence can tour the Truman Home and Presidential Library to learn more about this important historical figure.
