1. Winston-Salem was founded in 1913, through the merger of two nearby towns: Winston and Salem. Winston was known for its tobacco industry, while Salem was a Moravian settlement renowned for its crafts and trade. Today, Winston-Salem is known as the "City of the Arts and Innovation".

2. The town of Salem played a vital role in the American Revolutionary War. The Moravian settlement, which was committed to nonviolence, offered shelter to wounded revolutionary soldiers and also contributed supplies to the Patriots. Salem became a stronghold for the Patriots, and many of the town's craftsmen produced weapons and ammunition for the soldiers. The town was also the site of several skirmishes during the war.
