Columbus, Georgia played a significant role during the Civil War. Due to its location, it served as a valuable transportation hub for the Confederacy, helping to move troops and supplies to the battlefield. In fact, the city was home to one of the South's largest military hospitals, which was housed in what is now known as the Springer Opera House.

An interesting historical anecdote from Columbus is the story of the infamous "Ladies' Gunboat Society." During the Civil War, this group of women raised funds and purchased the ironclad gunboat, The Chattahoochee, for the Confederacy. The gunboat was constructed in Columbus and played a key role in defending the Chattahoochee River from Union forces.
