One fun fact about Lawrenceville, Georgia is that it was the site of Georgia's first successful airplane flight. On November 4, 1907, a group of local businessmen financed the construction of a biplane designed by Ben T. Epps, who was from nearby Athens, Georgia. The flight took place in an open field near the present-day Gwinnett County fairgrounds and lasted for about 5 seconds, with Epps piloting the plane to a height of 50 feet. This event marked the first time any aircraft built in the southern United States had taken to the air.
